Low Frequency Meters

Low Frequency Meters

From the natural geomagnetic field to transmission lines and electrical appliances at home or work, humans are continuously exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMF). Extremely low frequency (ELF) and intermediate frequency (IF) fields are a type of non-ionising radiation at the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Low frequency fields typically occur in transmission lines, industrial processes such as melting, smelting, and welding, electric railways, appliances and more.

The effects of low frequency fields have been shown to cause stimulation of nerve and muscle cells. And while humans can withstand weak interactions with low frequency radiation with little or minimal effect, the more intense signals can result in irreversible damage to humans. Radiation exposure is possible in all these applications which is why it is essential for occupational safety and environmental protection, to measure radiation levels in these areas.

How are people exposed to ELF electromagnetic fields?

EMF is produced by both natural and artificial sources. ELF EMF that occurs naturally includes ionospheric currents, thunderstorms, and lightning. Artificial sources are dominantly powerlines, electric wiring, common household appliances etc.
The widespread use of electricity means people are exposed to ELF electromagnetic fields in the home, environment, and workplace. ELF fields at residences depends on many factors including the distance from powerline, number of electric appliances in the home and household electrical wiring. Occupational exposure to ELF can vary. Workers in the electrical supply industry can be exposed to up to 2000 µT and electric fields up to 30 kV/m.

EMF meters trusted by industry professionals

Limits for human exposure to non-ionising radiation are stipulated in the relevant EMF recommendations, standards and regulations. The relevant governing bodies in Australia for non-ionising radiation are Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) The values are important to occupational safety as well as for the protection of the general public.

Air-Met Scientific are the exclusive distributor for the Narda Safety Test Solutions EMF product range in Australia. Our range of low frequency EMF meters includes:

  • ELT-400 Radiation Exposure Level Tester: Designed specifically for workplaces and public spaces and favoured by health and safety professionals, the ELT-400 has a wide frequency range between 1 Hz to 400 kHz
  • Narda Magnetometer HP-01: A portable, field exposure meter designed for the measurement and analysis of static and time-variable magnetic fields from 0 Hz to 1kHz. The HP-01 features a powerful FTT analyser that allows for signal analysis in both the time and the frequency domains and a built-in narrow band filter in the range of 0 Hz to 1 Hz making this ideal for standard-complaint measurements according to human safety standards.
  • EHP-200A Compact E and H Field Meter: The EHP-200A is a compact E and H field meter for measurements of both magnetic and electric RF radiationand is ideal for workplace safety applications, determining near and far fields of broadcasting transmitters, demonstrating safety around large scale antenna rays, checking the actual transmitted power in the actual direction of radiation and more.
  • EHP-50 Field Strength Analyser: Ideal for isotropic measurements of electric and magnetic ELF fields with a high dynamic range from 1 Hz to 400 kHz, the EHP-50F uses the weighted peak method for standard complaint measurements and directly displays the exposure as a percentage of the limit value.
