Spot Test Gas Detection Tubes

Spot Test Gas Detection Tubes

Air-Met Scientific are proud distributors of the colorimetric Kitagawa Gas Detector Tube System designed to accurately sample and determine hazardous and toxic gases and chemical vapour concentrations on the spot quickly and easily. Gas detector tubes are an alternative to other analytical methods that is simple to use, produces a rapid response, cost-effective and requires low maintenance.

How do Gas Detector Tubes Work?

The Kitagawa Gas Detector Tube System consists of an air sampling pump and precision gas detector tube. Lightweight, portable, and ergonomic, the Kitagawa air sampling pump draws 100cc of sample air through the detector tube. As the air sample works its way up the tube towards the pump, it reacts with the reagent and a colorimetric stain is created that is proportional in length to the concentration. Each Kitagawa gas detector tube has been formulated with high purity reagents in shatterproof tubes that absorb and react with the target gas or vapour being measured for complete accuracy.

Precision Gas Detector Tubes

Gas detector tubes are a great low-cost solution for on the spot measurements of many gases and vapours. With no need for calibration, the tips on each end of the detector tubes are cut off with the ceramic tip cutter on the Kitagawa air sampling pump and inserted into the hand pump which draws a sample of air through the tube.

Reacting with the reagents in the tube, a colorimetric stain is produced, and the concentration can be read directly off the measurement scale on each tube.

Kitagawa Gas Detector Tubes are available to measure over 200 different gases and vapours, with many different concentration ranges for the accurate detection of low concentrations and high concentrations.

Gas Detector Tubes for On-The-Spot Gas and Vapour Measurements

The versatile Gas Detector Tube System can be used in a variety of industries for the screening, spot sampling and testing of harmful gases and vapours in industrial environments.

Generally supplied in packs of ten tubes, Air-Met can supply gas detector tubes for the measurement and detection of gases including:

  • Ammonia: Suitable for process control, leakage detection in synthetic ammonia plants, fertilising manufacturing, refrigerant leak detection and occupational hygiene applications. Ammonia gas detection tubes from Kitagawa can be used for the sampling and analysis of ammonia quickly and accurately.
  • Carbon dioxide: Ideal for process control, air pollution analysis and more.
  • Formaldehyde: Suitable for atmospheric pollution surveys, germicide, fungicide organic manufacturing monitoring and more.
  • Hydrogen: Suitable for a range of occupational hygiene applications.
  • Ozone gas: These detector tubes are suitable for process control, air pollution analysis and occupational hygiene applications.
  • Hydrogen chloride: A corrosive vapour, these gas detector tubes are suitable for applications such as hydrogen chloride leakage detection, fire hazard detection, pharmaceuticals organics manufacturing and occupational hygiene applications.
  • Ethylene: Ideal for ethylene monitoring in coal mines, fruit ripening applications and plastic manufacturing applications.

Gas detector tubes from leading brand Kitagawa (Komyo Rikagaku Kogyo K.K) are available in Australia exclusively from Air-Met Scientific. Kitagawa spot gas detection tubes are available for over 200 types of gases and vapours including diesel fuel, ammonia, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, formaldehyde and many more. Contact your local office today to discuss your gas detection requirements.

Spot gas detection tubes are not reuseable. They are used to take instantaneous measurements and must then be disposed of. However, the air sampling pump that is used to draw air through the gas detection tube can be reused. Check the equipment specifications/manual to see specific reusability guidance or contact your local Air-Met Scientific for any enquiries.

The shelf life depends on the specific spot gas detector tube due to differences in the chemical reagents used in detecting different gases. The gas detector tubes also have varying storage requirements, although note that most must be stored in a refrigerated environment (0-10°C/32-50°F). Others require storage conditions to be dry, dark and air flow controlled. Speak to a representative from your local Air-Met Scientific today for any queries.

Spot gas detection tubes cannot be used for continuous gas monitoring. They are designed to provide an instantaneous, on-the-spot reading of an atmospheric gas concentration. Spot gas detection tubes can be used to compliment continuous gas monitoring systems such as a personal gas detector by providing an indication of gas concentration in a certain location at a specific time.

Spot gas detection tubes are a convenient method of instantaneously and accurately detecting whether a specific gas is present in a confined space and if so, at what concentration. They can be used upon entry to a confined space to verify whether the atmosphere is hazardous. For applications where continual monitoring of atmospheric gas concentrations are required, or more than one gas must be monitored, a personal or multi-gas detector would be more appropriate. Discuss your confined space gas detection needs with one of our friendly team members by contacting Air-Met Scientific today.

Spot gas detection tubes provide a single instantaneous measurement of atmospheric gas concentration in a certain location. They are disposed of after a single use but are a cost-effective, simple method to detect whether a certain gas is present in a specific area and to obtain an approximate concentration. In contrast, portable gas detectors and fixed gas detection systems continually monitor the concentration of one or more gases and have a host of other capabilities such as datalogging and alert notifications which provide greater visibility and breadth of data, enhancing protection of workers. Need help deciding what gas detection method is most suitable for your purposes? Contact your local Air-Met Scientific to speak to a friendly representative today.

Spot gas detector tubes provide a cost-effective, fast and accurate method for obtaining instantaneous atmospheric gas concentration measurements. However, portable gas monitors or fixed gas detection systems are more suitable in certain environments such as where:

  • More than one gas is of concern
  • Continuous monitoring is necessary
  • Datalogging is required
  • Gas concentrations may change suddenly (e.g. gas inrush)
  • Warnings and alarms are needed to protect workers

Feel free to contact your local Air-Met Scientific today to discuss your gas detection needs with our team.
