Hydration Solutions

Scientifically Developed High Performance Hypotonic Hydration Solution

Sweating is the primary mechanism in which our bodies lose heat and regulates our body’s temperature. Dehydration can occur when the fluid that is lost in sweat is not replaced and in turn results in the reduction of the body’s ability to lose heat through sweating. The result of this can lead to heat stress.

It is critically important for workers who are exposed to hot environments -- such as agriculture, mining, oil and gas and construction -- to keep hydrated, especially if they undertake long shifts. When workers are unable to regulate their body temperature, it can result in heat stress and an increased risk of workplace accidents due to mental and physical fatigue.

Workers performing tasks in hot environments and extended shifts of 10-12 hours can sweat on average 600ml of fluid per hour and therefore require a replacement of 6-7 litres of fluid per day.

Available in 3 flavours and a variety of sizes, our range of rehydration solutions from Aqualyte are scientifically developed to prevent the undesirable effects and risks associated with this condition on health and performance.

Aqualyte Rehydration Solutions

Sweat is composed of 99% water and small amounts of carbs, sodium, protein, and urea. Both water and electrolytes play a vital role in keeping workers hydrated. When you sweat, your body loses both water and electrolytes which are both important for your body to function correctly.

Water helps to regulate body temperature, digest food and lubricate tissues and joints whilst electrolytes help to retain fluid and maintain good nerve and muscle function which is why it is essential for both of these two components to be replaced with more than just water.

Based on years of scientific research, Air-Met’s range of Aqualyte High Performance Hydration Solution is low sugar, hypotonic fluid, and electrolyte replacement solution.

Aqualyte is a hypotonic dehydration solution with an osmolarity of 150 mOsmol/L which promotes rapid fluid absorption therefore providing fast action in preventing symptoms and its effect on health and performance and more effective than water or isotonic sports drinks.

A hypotonic hydration solution is designed to help maintain hydration levels making it ideal for managing heat stress or dehydration from prolonged exposure to heat and/or physical activity. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) like Aqualyte have low osmolality, meaning they have a lower concentration of electrolytes than the body (

Preventing heat stress and dehydration is crucial for maintaining health and safety in high-temperature work settings. Hypotonic hydration solutions are particularly beneficial for athletes and workers in hot environments where dehydration is a significant risk, such as in the military, construction, mining, and healthcare. Using a hypotonic solution can effectively rehydrate the body and enhance both mental and physical performance.

Compared to hypertonic and isotonic oral rehydration solutions, the benefits of hypotonic hydration solutions include:

  • Rapid Absorption: With a lower concentration of electrolytes, hypotonic hydration solutions are absorbed faster than other rehydration options, helping workers and athletes maintain proper electrolyte levels and prevent dehydration.
  • Cost-Effective and Convenient: Solutions like Aqualyte are easy to use and available in various natural flavours and sizes. Unlike many bottled sports drinks, Aqualyte was originally developed as a result of extensive scientific research into the effects of dehydration on the performance and health of underground miners. However, it’s advantages are beneficial for all employees facing situations where heat stress and dehydration is a concern. Workers can carry sachets and simply add water as needed, making it a practical alternative to bottled sports drinks.
  • Healthier Alternative: Aqualyte is low in sugar, low in carbs, and gluten-free. Compared to many other sports drink brands, Aqualyte has fewer calories and is less acidic, making it a healthier option.

A hydration solution, such as a hypotonic oral rehydration solution (ORS), should be used in situations where you may be prone to dehydration, such as during intense exercise or whilst working in hot and humid environments. As part of an effective heat stress prevention strategy, hydration solutions can be consumed prior, during and after exposure to these situations.

Heat stress can significantly reduce both mental and physical productivity, and prolonged exposure can lead to more serious illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Hypotonic hydration solutions like Aqualyte are easy-to-use ORS that maximise fluid absorption rates. They are ideal for workers in hot environments, military personnel, and endurance athletes. Aqualyte can be used as a single-serve sachet or prepared in larger quantities, which can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.

Air-Met Scientific stocks Aqualyte, an Australian-made, scientifically formulated hypotonic hydration solution available in a variety of pack sizes and flavours. Our most popular sizes include 25g, 80g, and 800g. Aqualyte is low in sugar and carbohydrates, and it comes in three natural flavours: mild orange, lemon and lime, and berry.

Aqualyte is used daily by thousands of Australian workers and athletes to enhance safety and performance. For more information on hypotonic hydration solutions, please contact your local Air-Met Scientific office.
