Air sampling calibration is the setting of the air flow through the filter medium to the recommended level for the method being used. Instruments that sample air must be flow adjusted, calibrated, and routinely checked to ensure the accuracy of flow rate. Personal sampling pumps must be calibrated before and after each use and routinely checked during use. Calibrators can either be a primary or secondary standard.
A primary standard is an instrument that bases its measurement on direct, measurable linear dimensions that will not change over time or is unaffected by temperature and atmospheric pressure. Secondary standard devices base their calibration upon primary standards and may be affected by temperature, atmospheric changes, and mishandling.
