EPA Victoria Releases New Water Protection Policy Document
EPA Victoria Releases New Water Protection Policy Document
Document 1773, Development of environmental quality indicators and objectives for SEPP (Waters), aims to give stakeholders a deeper understanding of new water protection policies introduced in 2018
Water resources, ranging from lakes, to rivers, to coasts, to groundwater, are some of Australia's most precious natural assets. Seeking to protect human health, the environment, and the integrity of Victoria’s aquatic ecosystems, State Environment Protection Policy (Waters), also known as SEPP (Waters), commenced on 19 October 2018. SEPP (Waters) unifies previous Victorian water protection policies to provide a single guiding instrument for water quality management in the state.
Developing SEPP (Waters) involved a series of extensive scientific reviews which have now been summarised in EPA document 1733, Development of environmental quality indicators and objectives for SEPP (Waters). Released on 1 May 2019,the document is intended to assist stakeholders in understanding the EPA’s process when developing environmental quality indicators and objectives for SEPP (Waters). It provides scientific justification for the policy changes, explains why they were proposed, and shows the evidence behind the decision-making process.
