Dangers of Buying Property with Methamphetamine Contamination

Buying a property that was once used to make methamphetamine or was used by an end-user can have long-term health effects on your health, even more so for the vulnerable such as children and the elderly. Methamphetamine can enter the body by simply touching contaminated surfaces, breathing airborne particles or by consuming food and beverages that have contacted a contaminated surface.

A property may look ordinary from both the outside and inside, however, methamphetamine contamination may have contaminated the walls, ceiling, carpet, insulation or other areas of the property. Methamphetamine contamination can remain in a property for many years after it was used or produced, so it's important to ensure that when you buy a property you identify whether the property has been contaminated to either avoid purchasing the property or to ensure that the property is decontaminated before moving in.

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Leakage

Carbon monoxide (CO) leakage is a serious incident that can occur in any gas heater. Therefore, its imperative that you protect your family, friends and colleagues from the lethal effects of carbon monoxide that may result in death or chronic illness. Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the 'silent killer' as it is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that occurs from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels.

The leakage of carbon monoxide can occur in any residential or commercial building with gas heating appliances, this includes newly purchased and installed ones. Dirty, old and unserviced heaters are more prone to carbon monoxide leakage. Consequently, its highly recommended from both experts and government agencies to service your heater every 2 years to reduce the risk of CO leakage.

A Guide To Accelerant Detection Tools

Fire investigation can be referred to as the origin and cause of fire-related incidents. After a fire has been extinguished by firefighters, an investigation is commonly launched to determine the origin and cause of the fire or explosion. It’s the job of investigators to figure out how and where the fire started and whether foul play was involved.

A common resource in the detection of accelerants is the use of trained arson detection dogs. These dogs have smell sensitivity that is 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than humans. This ultimately means that dogs can identify accelerants even through scatted debris. In terms of detecting the residue of volatile organic compounds (VOC) that may be present at a fire scene from common accelerants such as solvents, gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel, dogs have a sensitivity of 0.001 part per million (ppm). That’s an incredible 1 part per billion (ppb)!

    A Guide To Detecting Accelerants

Fire arson is an event that occurs when a fire is intentionally set for profit, revenge or just for ‘kicks’. According to a report by Victoria Police, it has cost the state in excess of $119 million over the last 5 years1.  Crime Statistics Victoria reported 3,101 incidents of arson in the year of 20172, with the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research reporting 5,862 incidents of arson in NSW during 2017 alone3. UK figures4 would suggest that more than 40% of fires in business premises and more than 20% in residential properties are intentional.

Arson investigations are particularly challenging because the evidence is often destroyed during the fire and the efforts of the fire brigade to extinguish the blaze. Investigations preceding the event can last for significant time periods as investigators have to sift through debris to find chemicals that may have been used as the accelerant. These accelerants are hydrocarbon-based fuels such as gasoline (petroleum), diesel fuel, kerosene, turpentine, butane, and various other flammable solvents collectively known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Trained sniffer dogs can be used as a traditional resource for tracing accelerants, however, these dogs may not be available when needed or have insufficient, unsafe access.

EMF Safety: Wideband and Selective Measurements

A wideband measurement made with the Narda NBM gives a measurement result for all the services taken together. Regardless of how much power is transmitted by TV, FM radio, or mobile communications, or how many transmitters there are, a wideband measurement gives a single result. The Narda NBN-550 features memory for saving up to 5,000 measurement results, voice recording for comments, intelligent probe interface detects probe parameters and numerous other beneficial features.

On the other hand, the Narda SRM, will get you any number of results, or more precisely, one result for each service that is present. Whether you want to display the total power of all FM stations, or to show the power of each FM station separately, it is only a question of the settings of the SRM. The device can dissect the frequency spectrum practically however you want. This is really important, particularly if the limit value is exceeded. The Narda SRM-3006 is suitable for outdoor use, features an integrated GPS and voice recorder for effective analysis.

Difference Between The Earth's Magnetic Field & That Of A NMR Tomograph

The difference is too big for most normal measuring instruments to measure the difference, that's for sure. The earth’s static magnetic field is around 40μT, but a nuclear magnetic resonance tomograph can easily generate between 1 and 7 Tesla. That’s around ten to the power of five times as much or 100 dB in telecommunications engineer’s language.

Choosing the right product to measure earth’s magnetic field is important to ensure you are always ready and able to measure these fields. The HP-01 from Narda can measure all three types of fields, isotropically and in accordance with standards. It has a wide measurement range from 10 µT to 10 T (dynamic range 120 dB) and can be used in a range of applications including Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MRT), Electric Mobility, Electrolysis, Magnetic Stirrers and Applications Involving Permanent Magnets, Direct Current Motors and Generators.

The Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Near field and far field: Where is the boundary between them? And what must I keep in mind?

These are common questions asked by many who are concerned or interested in the topic of safety in electromagnetic fields (EMF). Electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields exist wherever voltages and currents are present. Electromagnetic fields are emitted from broadcasting facilities for radio, television and telecommunications as well as in industrial facilities and medical equipment. High-voltage power lines emit this radiation as an undesired product; however, in telecommunications they purposely emit this radiation to transmit information. Electromagnetic fields do pose a biological risk to human health if individuals are exposed to this radiation consistently or for extended periods of time. EMF recommendations, standards and regulations intend to guide the limit of such harmful radiation. The Biological effects of EMF depend on:

New Filtered LEL Sensor for Ventis® Pro and Radius® BZ1

A new catalytic bead combustible (LEL) sensor has been released by Industrial Scientific. The new sensors have been designed to work with the Ventis® Pro 4 Multi Gas Monitor, Ventis® Pro 5 Multi Gas Monitor and Radius® BZ1 Area Gas Monitor instruments. These new sensors filter out hydrogen sulfide (H2S) which can desensitise and therefore shorten the life of the sensor.

Hydrogen sulfide can poison and permanently damage catalytic bead combustible sensors by attaching itself to a portion of, or the entire, sensing bead. Once attached, the hydrogen sulfide damages the sensitivity of the sensor, therefore shortening the life of the sensor. Traditional H2S filters used on catalytic bead sensors and heavy hydrocarbon vapours, such as diesel fuel or kerosene, are undetectable. The new LEL sensors are now capable of filtering out the H2S without: inhabiting hydrocarbon detection, changing sensor response times, or changing correlation factors to other combustible gases.

    It's National Asbestos Awareness Month

It’s November and it’s National Asbestos Awareness Month. With one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world, the Asbestos Awareness Month aims to educate Australian homeowners and tradespeople the dangers of asbestos in and around the home, especially when undertaking renovation or maintenance jobs and how to best manage it.
    Image

Asbestos was an extremely common material used in buildings before the mid-1980. At least a third of brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes and apartments will have asbestos present.  Asbestos can be found all around the home including under floor covering such as carpet, in walls, ceiling, eaves, garages, fences, outdoor toilets, ventilators and more. That being said, asbestos only becomes a health risk when asbestos fibres are disturbed usually during renovations, released into the air and breathed in.

Small Business Instant Instrumentation Asset Tax Write-Off Scheme

The Immediate Equipment and Instrumentation Asset Tax Write Off Scheme is Still On!

Claim an Immediate Tax Deductions on Assets Costing Less than $20,000

When did the instant asset write-off scheme commence?
The law commenced 7.30pm AEST 12 May 2015 and will cease on 30 June 2017.
As announced in the 2016-2017 budget, the scheme has not been extended and will still be due to end June 30, 2017.

    Who Is Eligible?
Any business that meets the definition of a small business entity, i.e. one with an aggregated turnover less than $2 million, may be eligible to claim an immediate deduction for the cost of depreciating assets acquired for less than $20,000.

From July 1 2016, the federal government will extend its $20,000 instant asset write-off scheme to business to businesses turning over up to $10 million however the scheme has not been extended and will still be due to end June 30, 2017.

    What Does This Mean?
This means that a small business will be able to claim an immediate deduction for the cost of each and every depreciating asset that they purchase for less than $20,000.

For example, Pamela bought a second hand skid steer loader for $17,000 on 28 May 2015 which is used solely in her landscaping business. As the depreciating asset cost less than $20,000, Pamela will be able to claim an immediate deduction for this asset.

    What Does It Apply To?
It should be noted that the measure applies to BOTH new and second hand assets.

It also applies on a per asset basis, so several assets each costing up to $20,000 would qualify for the write-off if installed ready for use before 30 June 2017.

What About Assets Over $20,000? Assets valued at $20,000 or more (which cannot be immediately deducted) can continue to be placed in the small business simplified depreciation pool and depreciated at 15% in the first income year and 30% each income year thereafter. The pool can also be immediately deducted if the balance is less than $20,000 over this period (including existing pools).

    For Example:

Maximise Low Flow Sampling Efficiency with Geotech Bladder Pumps

Low flow sampling in the field requires time and expertise. So don't rush it and take your time!

To maximise low flow sampling efficiency in the field, many parameters must be met in order to produce the best outcome. Your pumping system for example must minimise drawdown and turbidity.

Well parameters need to be monitored for stabilisation and the sampling flow rate must be adjusted accordingly in order to achieve the best possible sample catch rate. Additionally, not all wells share the same characteristics and sites do vary considerably. Having the right tools available to your team will make a significant difference in your low flow sampling efficiency.

Industrial Scientific Introduces the DSX™ Docking Station

The company that pioneered docking stations for portable gas detectors releases the most versatile and cost-effective docking station available.

Industrial Scientific , the global leader in Gas Detection as a Service, today introduced the DSX™ Docking Station, the only gas detector maintenance and record keeping solution suited to support the needs and requirements of every customer, regardless of size, location, or infrastructure. The DSX builds upon Industrial Scientific's 16-year history of docking station innovation that began with the DS1000 docking station, introduced to the market in 1999.

With industry safety regulations becoming increasingly stringent and life-saving instrument maintenance getting more attention than ever before, the DSX Docking Station provides three easy-to-choose-from operating modes: standalone, cloud-connected (DSXi), and local server (DSX-L). The DSX Standalone is an out-of-the-box solution that requires no network configuration or support. It provides easy bump testing and calibration of instruments, automated record keeping, and automated instrument wake-up and instrument battery charging. With the use of a DSXi activation key, the DSX Standalone becomes a cloud-connected, fully automated instrument maintenance station. There is no need to send anything back for activation - all upgrades are easily performed in the field.
