The Need for an Asbestos Safety and Management Organisation
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral made up of tiny, microscopic fibres. When it is disturbed, these fibres become airborne and can be easily inhaled. Asbestos is a carcinogen as its fibres can get trapped in the lungs and cause cancer. Asbestos is known to cause lung, ovary and larynx cancer and can develop decades after exposure.
Friable asbestos products have been commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings since the late 1800s for fireproofing, soundproofing and insulation. It was only in 2003 that asbestos was banned from use in manufacture, use, reuse, import, transport, storage, or sale.
The people at greatest risk of asbestos inhalation are those that undertake repairs, maintenance, renovations and other work on older buildings and infrastructure which contain asbestos materials. Exposure to asbestos has led to premature deaths of many workers in Australia and New Zealand. FAMANZ works in conjunction with allied industry societies, regulators, government, and the community in Australia and New Zealand to raise the professional and ethical standards of professionals providing services to the asbestos management industry.
Air-Met Scientific has been supplying and servicing the Asbestos management industry with asbestos sampling equipment since 1984. We are proud to be a platinum sponsor of FAMANZ and am looking forward to working together to educate workers and the general public about the dangers of asbestos.
